Pacific Parents Participating And Supporting The Journey To Graduation

Abstract:

Aaron is of Niuean and Samoan descent with parents who came to New Zealand in the 1950’s for better schooling and work. He has a Bachelor of Social Sciences from Waikato University (1993 first in family) and spent 20 years in the public sector in senior and management roles. He was appointed as the first Chief Advisor Pasifika for the New Zealand Qualifications Authority in 2011, leading two major projects; a Pasifika parent NCEA information programme, and a five year NZAID project in Samoa and Tonga. It was at NZQA where he developed a greater passion for Pacific education.

In 1996 Aaron received the Samoan Ali’i title of Fa’amatuainu from Lufilufi. In March 2015 he undertook full time study in Pacific education at Victoria University, completing a Post Graduate Diploma in Education and Professional Development with Merit. In January 2016 Aaron was appointed as Manager Te Pūtahi Atawhai, the Māori and Pasifika Student Success Unit within Victoria where he leads a team that delivers high class holistic and mentoring support to meet the academic needs of Pasifika and Māori students.
